Where Your Holiday Money Goes: How Staying Local Supports Bright

Most of us like the idea of “supporting local” when we travel. It feels good. But it can also feel a bit vague, the kind of phrase that ends up on a tote bag without much behind it.

So we thought we’d be specific. When you book a holiday home in Bright with a locally based manager, your money doesn’t just disappear into a booking app and head offshore. It moves through the town and the wider Alpine Valleys in a way that’s surprisingly easy to trace. Here’s the journey your booking dollar actually takes.

It starts with the people who look after your home

Every home we manage needs a team behind it, and that team lives here. Your cleaners are local. So are the maintenance people, the gardeners, the tradies we call when a hot water system carries on at the worst possible moment, and the “legends on the ground,” as we like to call them, who make sure your place is ready before you arrive.

These aren’t faceless contractors dispatched from a city three hours away. They’re people who live in Bright, Harrietville, Porepunkah and the surrounding valleys, whose wages go back into the same shops, schools and sporting clubs you’ll drive past on your way into town. When you book a stay, you’re helping keep those jobs here, in a region where seasonal work can be hard to string together across the year.

Then there are the property owners

A good number of the homes we manage belong to people who live right here in the valley, or who have a long-standing connection to it. For them, holiday letting isn’t an abstract investment on a spreadsheet. It’s income that helps them hold on to a family property, cover the rates and keep a home in good shape in a town they love.

Booking locally means more of the nightly rate reaches those owners rather than being skimmed away in platform commissions. Which brings us to the part most people never see.

Book direct, and more of it stays in town

Here’s the bit the big platforms would rather you didn’t think about. When you book through a large international site, a slice of every booking, often a significant one, leaves the region entirely. It goes to a head office in another country, not to anyone who’ll ever set foot in Bright.

When you book direct with us, that leakage stops. There are no third-party booking fees, the pricing is clearer, and the money stays in the local economy where it can actually do some good. You also get a real person at the end of the phone, one who knows the property and the town, rather than an overseas call centre. We’ve been doing this in Bright for more than 18 years, and that local knowledge is genuinely part of what you’re paying for.

The little things in your home are local too

Look a little closer at the home you’re staying in and the same story repeats on a smaller scale. We deliberately stock our properties with products from makers in our own backyard.

The body care in your bathroom is from Dindi Naturals, a much-loved brand handmaking natural soaps, shampoos and conditioners right here in North East Victoria. The coffee pods in your kitchen are from Honeybird Coffee, also local to the North East, and they’re certified organic and compostable. These are small choices on their own, but multiplied across a whole portfolio of homes and thousands of guest nights, they add up to real, steady support for regional producers.

It’s the same thinking behind the plant-based cleaning products and other partners we’ve chosen. If you’re curious about the full list and the reasons behind each one, we’ve laid it all out on our We Care page.

Even your booking plants trees

There’s one more stop on the journey. A portion of every booking goes towards planting native trees through our partnership with 15 Trees, an Australian organisation that works with local Landcare groups and community volunteers. So far that’s added up to more than 1,000 trees in the ground, helping restore bushland and habitat across Victoria. We’ve written more about how that works in our 15 Trees partnership story if you’d like the detail.

Why we bang on about this

Because it works, and because it was recently recognised. In 2026 we were named the STRive Awards winner for Sustainability and Community Impact, which meant a great deal to a small team in a small mountain town.

None of this asks anything extra of you. You came for the rivers, the rail trail, the autumn colour and a comfortable place to put your feet up, and that’s exactly what you should get. It’s just nice to know that the same holiday, booked locally, quietly does a lot of good on the way through.
