A Bit Further
Bright is the perfect place to base yourself to explore Victoria’s High Country region. From the world class wineries of the King Valley and Rutherglen, the historic towns of Beechworth & Yackandandah, the fresh produce of Stanley, and the cultural heritage of Myrtleford, there are so many things to do and discover for those that would like to explore a bit further. Getting around is easy too, whether it’s by car, tour, or two wheels using the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail.
Victoria’s High Country region offers a wide range of activities and experiences to enjoy
While Bright and the nearby towns of Porepunkah, Wandiligong and Harrietville have plenty to offer, they also serve as the ideal base to explore Victoria’s High Country region.
It’s an area rich in history; from the indigenous groups who travelled to Mount Bogong to meet and feast on the moth of the same name, through to the frenetic gold rush period which spurred much of region’s European settlement. Highlights include Beechworth’s historic town centre, which includes the jail Ned Kelly was held in after his capture at nearby Glenrowan.
Food and wine also dominate. Victoria’s North East wine region is a highlight, and includes the renowned King Valley – famous for its Prosecco sparkling wine and Italian varietals – and Rutherglen, which makes some of the country’s best fortified wines. Most wineries include a cellar door serving delicious meals; or drop into one of the many fresh produce suppliers and craft your own meal.
