The rich history of the gold rush that shaped the towns and countryside of Beechworth, Chiltern, Rutherglen and Yackandandah can be explored on a fascinating self-guided tour of the Indigo Gold Trail.
The Trail takes in some of the most picturesque countryside in Australia and includes dozens of easily accessible historic sites identified by storyboards featuring the trail logo.
Pick up a brochure at any of the Visitor Information Centres in Beechworth, Chiltern, Rutherglen or Yackandandah and explore the legacy of the rush for gold – from the perfectly preserved streetscapes of the towns to the countless mine shafts and mullock heaps, water races carved through solid granite, Chinese Burning Towers and pioneer graves and historic government buildings, schools and museums.
You can start or finish at any point along the way. You can stop for a picnic in a national park or next to a beautiful creek, lunch at a gourmet restaurant, or one of the area’s famous bakeries, grab a hand-crafted beer or a bottle of fine local wine.
An Indigo Gold Trail audio guide is also available via the website or you can visit the Apple App Store to download the app.
